WEB EXCLUSIVE: At the MD&M West medical show in Anaheim, Calif., last month, DuPont Performance Polymers, Wilmington, Del., showed off two new applications for its Delrin acetal. One was the UnoPen disposable, variable-dose injector pen for insulin and other drug therapies, which comes from Ypsomed AG in Switzerland. It uses a new ultra-low-friction grade, Delrin (Special Control) SC699, for the dose dial sleeve. Its exceptional low-friction performance is basic to the pen’s ease of use, requiring the patient to use less force to dose or inject the drug. Ypsomed tested many competitive plastics but non fulfilled the requirements as well as this grade, DuPont says. Delrin SC699 is also compatible with laser marking, by use of an appropriate masterbatch, to apply indicators for the dose settings.

At MD&M West, DuPont also showcased the new CABO safety scalpel from Southmedic in Ontario. A grade of Delrin SC (Special Control) is used for the black scalpel blade holder. The precision injection molded part has a snap-fit design and low-friction properties so that the clear, retractable polycarbonate sheath slides easily along the holder’s grooved track.
