At this month’s Fakuma show in Germany, Wacker Chemie AG (parent of Wacker Chemical Corp., Adrian, Mich.) will introduce two new liquid silicone rubber grades that achieve UL 94V-0 flammability rating without abrasive fillers. Compared with other highly flame-retardant LSR grades, which contain fillers like quartz, Elastosil LR 3011/50 FR and LR 3170/40 contain special non-abrasive inert fillers that are said to cause considerably less mold fouling and wear. The two new grades are aimed at LED fittings for flat-screen monitors, axial and radial seals in connection sockets, and single-wire seals for solar collector housings. Also, electrically powered vehicles require increased flame-resistance for their components. Elastosil LR 3011/50 has around 50 Shore A hardness. Elastosil LR 3170/40 has 44A hardness and is a self-bonding grade for hard/soft overmolding onto aluminum and certain flame-retardant nylons. No surface priming or pretreatment is necessary.
