Thermoplastic compounds for laser direct structuring (LDS) to apply circuitry to mobile phone and notebook antennas don’t have to be just black anymore, so they don’t have to be hidden inside the devices. SABIC Innovative Plastics, Pittsfield, Mass., has come out with its first LNP Thermocomp compound for LDS that are custom colorable. The first grade is LNP Thermocomp NX11302, a PC/ABS designed for LDS technology from LPKF Laser & Electronics AG. Custom colorability allows antennas, sensors and other functionality to be incorporated into device housings, permitting further parts consolidation and slimmer, smaller designs. Other potential uses are LEDs and connectors.
