WEB EXCLUSIVE: PolyOne Corp., Cleveland, announced two extensions of its product lines for medical components at the recent MD&M West show in Anaheim, Calif. PolyOne GLS Thermoplastic Elastomers has added three grades to its Versalloy HC TPV series: Versalloy HC 9220-70, 9220-80, and 9220-90. With Shore A hardnesses of 70, 80, and 93 respectively, they are drop-in replacements for certain TPV medical grades that ExxonMobil Chemical Co. plans to discontinue by the end of this year. The new grades are made with ExxonMobil’s Santoprene TPV under an exclusive agreement between the two companies.
Also, PolyOne added Geon HC 8210, a high-flow, high-impact, rigid PVC compound for medical housings to its Geon HC family of medical PVC materials. The latter includes flexible grades and clear rigids for luer locks, valves, and connectors. PolyOne says that increasing use of stronger disinfectants to fight hospital-acquired infections has led to more frequent failures of plastic medical equipment through cracking and crazing. Geon HC 8210 is designed specifically for excellent chemical resistance to common hospital disinfectants—performance said to be superior to many engineering thermoplastic alternatives.
