WEB EXCLUSIVE: Motion Computing in Austin, Texas, developed the C5 Mobile Clinical Assistant to bring accurate patient data input and retrieval to the point of care in hospital or other clinical settings. A key feature is the comfortable, easy-grip surface on the back and sides of the tablet and in the hand-grip area, provided by TPSiV thermoplastic silicone vulcanizate from Multibase USA, Copley, Ohio. The material is soft without being tacky, because it contains no plasticizer or oils to achieve its silky feel and non-slip security. Consisting of crosslinked silicone rubber in a TPU matrix, the TPV is overmolded onto the PC substrate that forms the back of the tablet computer. The overmolding also forms an integral seal between the top and bottom of the computer’s case, keeping out moisture and dust without requiring a separate O-ring or gasket. The soft surface also provides a degree of mechanical shock protection and is resistant to oil, grease, and commercial disinfectants. Multibase formulated a light gray that resists UV light from fluorescent lamps without color change.
