WEB EXCLUSIVE: Solvay Advanced Polymers, LLC, Alpharetta, Ga., is collaborating with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Co. Inc. (MGC) of Tokyo, Japan, to develop a new line of renewably sourced high-temperature polyamides. With a melting point of 280 to 290 C (536-554 F) and HDT for glass-filled compounds of around 270-275 C (518-527 F) @ 264 psi, the new polymer will be one of the most heat-resistant biobased thermoplastics available. Other properties include low moisture retention, high crystallization rate, excellent wear resistance, and good toughness. It will be based on a new monomer (non-biobased) from MGC plus sebacic acid derived from castor oil. The end result will be 50% to 60% biobased. Solvay says it “will nicely complement” the company’s Amodel polyphthalamide (PPA), though probably not equal to the high end of the Amodel temperature range. The new resin is expected to appear in developmental quantities around mid-2011 and commercial quantities in the third quarter. MGC is also the supplier of MXDA monomer for Solvay’s Ixef MXD6 nylon.
