WEB EXCLUSIVE: New blends of thermoplastic starch (TPS) and recycled PP reportedly enable processors to incorporate 95% “green” content (biobased plus recycled) while obtaining physical properties comparable to virgin PP. The new blends are the Terraloy BP-13020 series from the Bioplastics Div. of Teknor Apex Co., Pawtucket, R.I. They are also available as masterbatches that can be let down 1:1 with virgin PP for a resulting 47% “green” content. The ready-to-use compounds contain 25% to 30% TPS with PP, of which 70% to 75% is recycled. Terraloy MB-13020 masterbatches have 35% to 50% TPS and up to 50% recycled PP. These products are recommended for injection molded consumer products, sheet, profiles, tubing, bottles, and jars.
