WEB EXCLUSIVE: A high-tech thermoplastic makes knob covers for surgical microscopes withstand multiple autoclave sterilization cycles. The knob covers from Prescott’s Manufacturing Inc. are injection molded from Radel R-5100 polyphenylsulfone from Solvay Advanced Polymers, LLC, Alpharetta, Ga. The reusable covers must be sterilized after each use and withstand up to 1000 autoclave cycles while maintaining toughness. In addition, Radel PPSU permits a 20-sec molding cycle, much faster than the thermoset plastic it replaced.
