A carbodiimide-modified MDI reportedly features improved low-temperature stability, clarity, and shelf-life compared with similar PUR raw materials for elastomers. New Lupranate 5143 from BASF Corp., Urethanes Div., Wyandotte, Mich., is designed to produce soft elastomers with high elongation and HDT plus good impact, tear, and tensile strengths. It reportedly gives longer gel time than competing materials, and also has a lower freeze point than previous carbodiimide-modified MDIs, such as monomeric 4,4 MDI. Better low-temperature stability helps ease handling for field formulators.
