Metal-plated carbon fiber for composites is now commercially available from Electro Fiber Technologies LLC, Stratford, Conn., div. of Technical Fibre Products Ltd., Newburgh, N.Y. Continuous carbon-fiber tow is plated with nickel, copper, or both. Nonwoven veil/mats, woven fabric, continuous tow, and chopped fiber are offered. The materials are aimed at EMI/RFI shielding for aerospace, defense, automotive, electronics, construction, and medical markets. Among targeted composite processes are vacuum infusion, RTM, and hand lay-up. Chopped fiber has been tested for use in injection molded thermoplastics. Cost is three to 10 times that of plain carbon fiber. (845) 567-9066 • www.electrofibertechnologies.com
