New three- and four-layer metalized OPP films introduced at Pack Expo in Chicago this month by Toray Plastics (America) Inc., North Kingstown, R.I., use new technology to achieve a record low oxygen-transmission level of 0.003 cc/100 in.2/24 hr vs. about 0.6 for typical metalized OPP. Developmental PC5 film has vacuum-deposited aluminum over a high-barrier resin layer and a PP core that is surface treated for printing. PC5 is being sampled in 50- and 60-mil gauges. Developmental PWX5 film has an added seal layer for snack packs. Both films have aluminum deposited with high optical density of at least 2.0, creating distinct strata of aluminum that enhance barrier.
