A new flatbed screen-printing ink for a wide variety of plastic substrates produces mirror effects as an economical alternative to foil blocking and film metalization. Developed by Ciba Specialty Chemicals, Tarrytown, N.Y., Xymara Quicksilver SF-02 is a ready-to-use, solvent-based ink formulated to optimize the performance of Ciba's Xymara Metasheen vacuum-metalized pigment (VMP). When reverse printed, the new ink promotes alignment of the VMP flakes so that a continuous metallic film with exceptional reflectivity is formed upon drying. When combined with Ciba colorants such as Microlith A and Orasol, it enables creation of colorful mirror effects. The ink reportedly works especially well with PET and PC, but also with treated PP and PE. Applications include point-of-sale displays, packaging, and labels for consumer goods such as perfumes, fashion wear, and luxury beverages. Tel: (800) 431-2360 . www.cibasc.com
