Plantic Technologies Ltd., Melbourne, Australia, extrudes packaging from a proprietary starch-based polymer on a corotating twin-screw extruder from Entek Manufacturing, Lebanon, Ore. The extruder mixes and “cooks” the mix of starch, water, and other ingredients, which is extruded into 24-in.-wide, clear or colored sheet for thermoforming. Plantic sells formed trays made of the material, which is biodegradable and compostable. The first application was in 2003: candy trays for Cadbury chocolates in Australia. This past October, Plantic won its first large European order to make candy trays for Nestle in the U.K. Plantic uses a 53-mm Entek extruder and has ordered a 103-mm model.
