A proprietary mixer piggybacked on a 10-in. hot-melt extruder is making hollow HDPE profiles containing 40% wood flour. Advanced Extruder Technologies (AET), Elk Grove Village, Ill., developed the continuous mixer and combined it with its Advantage Series hot-melt extruder for direct compounding and extrusion. The line doesn't require predried wood flour, since it pulls a vacuum between the mixer and extruder, followed by more vacuum vents on the extruder. AET has delivered two such mixer/extruder combinations for direct wood-plastic extrusion and a third is on order. Nominal capacity is 5000 lb/hr, but output is limited by the ability to cool the profile, depending on its formulation and design.
