Mobile injection equipment has been introduced for in-situ repair and strengthening of steel maritime and civil-engineering structures like bridge and ship decks. The equipment was introduced by Cannon of Italy (U.S. office in Cranberry Township, Pa.) for the patented steel-polyurethane composite known as the Sandwich Plate System (SPS). This technology was developed by BASF’s Elastogran subsidiary in Germany and Intelligent Engineering Ltd. of the U.K. It has been available for license since 2001. SPS bonds two metal face plates to a solid PUR elastomer core that is injected as a liquid. Sandwich plates can be prefabricated off-site for new structures, but repairs are made in-situ with the existing steel structure forming one side of the SPS overlay. The new “A-Mobile” is a self-propelled Cannon A-Compact high-pressure injection system that fits in a 20-ft shipping container. The closed-loop system can inject 7.5 lb/sec. It comes with control panel, heat exchangers, two-zone temperature control, metering pumps, air compressor, and four IBC containers with refilling system. They hold 8800 lb of PUR chemicals. The remotely controlled caterpillar transport system has its own gasoline engine or electric motor integrated with the hydraulic metering motors and valves. The metering unit and two main IBCs are enclosed in an insulated box with ventilation from a dedicated heating/cooling unit for operation in cold or hot conditions. Cannon’s LN 18 mixing head is mounted on a retractable boom together with a magnetic device that fixes the head onto the metal plate during injection. This turnkey system is ready for production once on site.
