WEB EXCLUSIVE: Solvay Advanced Polymers, LLC, Alpharetta, Ga., has expanded its AvaSpire series of lower-cost modified PEEK materials with the new AV-600 series. Unlike the AV-700 series (reported here in July), which offers performance comparable to standard PEEK at lower cost, the AV-600 series provides even better performance than standard PEEK while costing less. This is most apparent in unfilled grades, which show improved ductility and toughness, such as 20% higher elongation at yield and at least twice the elongation at break of comparable standard PEEK grades. This can benefit interference-fit or press-fit assemblies and help manage stresses in products with sharp corners.
Unfilled AV-600 grades also offer improved vertical flammability ratings of UL 94V-0 at 0.8 mm thickness. They also have higher HDTs of 187 to 193 C at 264 psi (annealed), vs. 157 to 160 C for comparable standard PEEK. This provides higher stiffness at 150 to 190 C (302 to 374 F). Modulus of AvaSpire AV-651 at 180 C (356 F) is about twice that of comparable PEEK, and modulus of a 30% glass-filled grade is 30% higher than standard PEEK at the same temperature. This extends the useful range of PEEK above 150 C (302 F), which until now has been the practical upper limit for standard unfilled PEEK.
AV-600 grades come in two molding and one extrusion versions, as well as grades with 30% glass or carbon fiber. Most AV-600 products have chemical resistance nearly equivalent to standard PEEK. They also have reduced shrinkage and warpage.
