Two new series of tooling components designed to reduce friction and wear come from Progressive Components, Wauconda, Ill. New needle-bearing side and top locks provide precise registration between mold halves while preventing metal-to-metal friction when the mold halves move together. Long, thin steel bearings provide lifting without metal-to-metal wear. In tests, the locks reportedly showed virtually no wear after 1 million cycles. Progressive also has new slide retainers that eliminate the resistance and abrasion that can occur with other slide locks. The retainers have a roller that engages a groove in the side-action assembly and a spring that has been tested for millions of cycles. The retainers are said to be more compact and easier to machine than other units and can manage heavier loads with maintenance-free operation.
