A new solvent-based, semi-permanent release agent is said to reduce wax build-up on molds. Axel Plastics Laboratories, Inc., Woodside, N.Y., says its Xtend 875 provides easy releases in high-volume automotive applications that demand clean part surfaces. At one major automotive molder, three to four coats of Xtend 875 were sprayed on clean steel and epoxy molds heated to 150 to 180 F. Within 5 min, the coated molds were ready for use. Such speed had not been possible with the wax-based spray release previously used, which required hand polishing after application. Molds with Xtend 875 reportedly released parts cleanly on the first shot and continued to do so without need for additional release. By contrast, the previous wax release had to be applied to the mold gate for each shot. With Xtend 875, all parts reportedly had excellent surface finish and required no sanding or rework, unlike some parts released with wax.
