Two new flame retardants for flexible urethane foam are said to be significantly more efficient than their predecessors. Firemaster 600 and 602 from Chemtura Corp., Middlebury, Conn., are proprietary phosphorus-bromine flame retardants. Like the older Firemaster 550 and 552, the new products are not based on brominated diphenyl ether (BDE) chemistry. However, the new grades are said to permit about 10% lower use levels and to exhibit outstanding scorch resistance, minimal effect on foam processing or physical properties, as well as a favorable environmental profile. Grade 602 is specifically recommended for mechanically cooled foams.
