Hybrid Plastics, Hattiesburg, Miss., is now making masterbatches of its POSS (polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane) nanochemicals. These hybrid organic/inorganic additives are cage-like molecules typically measuring 1.5 nanometers wide. They dissolve in a plastic melt and then recrystallize on cooling to form a network that can enhance mechanical properties and flame resistance. The company produces 150 different POSS products that can be incorporated into virtually any polymer through blending, grafting, or copolymerization. The first commercial use of POSS masterbatches is in food and consumer packaging films.
