A new nanoclay concentrate in a nylon 6 carrier is said to provide a major increase in physical properties of nylon 6 films. According to the supplier, Techmer PM, Clinton, Tenn., just 2% nanoclay loading in a 2-mil film raises tensile strength 46% to 10,195 psi and elongation increases by 38%. According to v.p. of technology Abe Mor, there are only minor effects on the film's clarity. 'We measured a drop of a mere 1.2% in clarity and 2.2% in light transmission-and haze actually decreased three percentage points to 19%," he said. The accompanying graph shows how nylon film under load deforms at lower temperature than nylon with nanoclay. With 5% nanoclay, film properties are actually lower than with 2% nanoclay: A 2-mil film exhibits 38% higher tensile strength and 25% higher elongation than unfilled film. Optical effects are more pronounced, with clarity declining to 53%, while haze increases to 33%. Says Mor, "We expect that higher levels of nanoclay will substantially improve the barrier properties of nylon films, so the tradeoff in optics may appeal to many customers. We are working to quantify the performance of nanoclay films in terms of oxygen and water-vapor permeability and chemical resistance.
