A new nitriding process for machine tiebars is said to give better corrosion resistance, fatigue strength, and lubricity than chrome or nickel plating. The new tiebar finish will be offered as standard on all Allrounder presses from Arburg Inc., Newington, Conn.


Tiebars are first plasma hardened in a vacuum oven, then gas nitrided. Additional corrosion protection occurs in the final processing stage by spraying the parts with steam, which creates the black coloring of the tiebar. The wear-resistant layer is a few mils thick, but it reduces the friction coefficient, which improves sliding properties.
