A new line of color and additive concentrates for blow molded, injection molded, and thermoformed plastic products are engineered to provide controlled viscosity that can significantly boost productivity. According to Ampacet Corp., Tarrytown, N.Y., its new Performance Plus line of concentrates has been shown to increase productivity by 15% to 40% through faster cycle times and reduced scrap—and up to 100% in some extrusion processes. Applications range from large pails and lawn/garden products to consumer packaging (bottles). These concentrates are reportedly safe for applications requiring FDA approval. The concentrates are designed to provide lower viscosity in most polymers at low shear rates. In molding, this effect reportedly can improve part fill, permit lower molding temperatures, and reduce shot-to-shot variations and warpage. The controlled viscosity also helps give more uniform color/additive distribution throughout the barrel, Ampacet says. They also boast a unique purging quality, which further helps to speed changeover times and reduce scrap.
