A new, clear copolyester from Eastman Chemical Products, Inc., Kingsport, Tenn., continues to broaden its range of applications. Eastman’s Tritan copolyester was first introduced last fall for dishwasher-safe containers, reusable water bottles, and cookware. Since then, it has appeared in thermoformable sheet for signs. Now, Tritan comes in medical grades that reportedly provide superior lipid and chemical resistance, hydrolytic stability, and retention of properties after gamma, E-beam, or ethylene oxide sterilization. Tritan competes with other copolyesters, polycarbonate, and acrylics for applications like IV system components, respiratory devices, and blood-therapy devices. In addition, the first commercial compounds made with Tritan have been launched by PolyOne Corp., Cleveland, which is the exclusive compounder and marketer of filled Tritan compounds in North America. PolyOne’s new Edgetek compounds based on Tritan are currently available in 16 grades with varying levels of glass and mineral fillers.
