New developments in liquid silicone rubber include a new low-durometer line and a novel technology that provides build-in antimicrobial protection. Both were introduced recently at the Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) East show in N.Y.C. Bluestar Silicones, East Brunswick, N.J. expanded its Silbione LSR line with soft grades from 5 to 25 Shore A. The 10 A material, Silbione LSR 4310, reportedly offers higher elongation and 50% greater tear strength than other products of similar durometer. Also new is Silbione LSR 4325, a 25 A product for strength-and-return-type applications like balloon catheters. The 5 A grade, Silbione LSR 4305, offers tacky gel-like features for cushioning. Momentive Performance Materials Inc., Wilton, Conn., introduced StatSil LSR with antimicrobial protection provided by a silver-based additive dispersed into the polymer. It is aimed at medical applications such as catheters and wound drains. Injection and extrusion grades are 3 to 80 Shore A.
