A new series of DCPD polyester casting resins are said to accept higher filler loadings to reduce costs for cultured marble manufacturers by at least 11%. Vicast A830 resins from AOC, LLC, Collierville, Tenn., have lower viscosity than standard polyesters with the same styrene content (29-32%), typically 150 to 250 cps vs. the usual 1100-1200 cps. This low viscosity not only allows for a 10% to 20% reduction in resin content, but actually requires it because of the resins’ higher reactivity and exotherm, which could otherwise cause cracking in thick sections. Higher filler levels keep exotherm within the normal range. These non-thixotropic, low-shrink resins are pre-promoted for room-temperature cure with 1% to 1.5% MEKP at gel times from 10 to 55 min. Resin content can be as low as 18% to 20% by weight with calcium carbonate and 20% to 25% with lightweight fillers. Cured properties are said to be very similar to standard marble formulations. Since DCPD resins tend to adhere to molds, application of mold release requires careful attention. AOC also recommends longer mixing (6-8 min) to achieve thorough wet-out, and the mix can be expected to look drier than normal. Heating the resin (up to 95 F) will enable maximum filler loadings.
