New material options for FDM (fused-deposition modeling) rapid prototyping and direct digital manufacturing systems are available from Stratasys, Inc., Minneapolis. PC and PC/ABS are now available for the FDM 360mc, while translucent ABS and pharmaceutical-grade (USP Class VI) PC are new options for the FDM 400mc. The expanded product slate is said to offer users access to stronger, more flexible and higher- temperature materials. PC can be applied in “slice” thicknesses of 0.007, 0.010, and 0.013 in. PC/ABS can be applied thinner (0.005 in.) as well as in the foregoing thicknesses. Translucent ABS (called ABSi) is recommended for applications like automotive lighting and those that require monitoring of liquid or particle flow. It comes in clear, red and amber. The USP-grade PC (called PC-Iso) can be sterilized for medical devices or food/pharmaceutical handling equipment. Both can be used in slices over the full range of thicknesses from 0.005 to 0.013 in.
