Now you can dry color and additive pellets before mixing them with virgin resin. This can correct problems of additive separation in a drying hopper, according to Comet Automation Systems, Inc., Dayton, Ohio. Its new Micro Additive Drying System (Micro ADS) automatically dries and feeds color and additive pellets into the machine throat. This provides more uniform additive levels, especially when injection molding small shots, Comet says. Molders who avoid this problem by feeding undried additive often run slower cycles to permit venting moisture in the additive pellets. The Micro ADS unit thus also increases productivity. Comet sources say users increase yields by up to 8% through reduced scrap and faster cycles, thereby paying for the dryer in less than three months. This compressed-air dryer has hopper capacities of 250 cc to 2 liters (1-liter Pyrex hopper is shown). It measures about 20 x 5 in. (l x w), and height with the 1L hopper is around 25 in. It mounts on the machine throat.
