New release 5.1 of Moldflow Plastics Insight software from Moldflow Corp., Wayland, Mass., includes a direct interface to Ansys structural analysis software from Ansys Inc., Canonsburg, Pa. This allows users of Moldflow injection molding simulation to export data on thermo-mechanical properties, fiber orientation, and process-induced residual stress or volumetric shrinkage to Ansys for more in-depth structural analysis. This ensures that Ansys uses material properties that realistically reflect the effects of the injection molding process. Other new features in MPI 5.1 include ability to simulate thermoset injection-compression molding and the effects of overflow wells in gas-assist molding. Visualization of warpage results has been improved. For thick, chunky parts, MPI/3D meshes can now be generated up to 20% to 50% faster while using 10% to 40% less memory. Also new are an automatic mesh-repair wizard and ability to adjust the size of tetrahedral elements through the thickness of the part.
