Glass-filled nylons are the first in a series of new laser-weldable compounds from Techmer Lehvoss LLC, Clinton, Tenn. Introduced at the NPE show, the first grade is Luvotech J-3/15/LW BK, a 15% glass-filled nylon 6. Laser welding requires a pair of materials, one transparent to laser energy and the other laser-absorbing. The first is placed on top, so the laser energy passes through and reaches the absorbing material underneath, which heats up to form the weld. The laser-transparent part can appear opaque and even black. (The first commercial application is a black automotive under-hood part.) Techmer is also developing laser-weldable PBT.
