WEB EXCLUSIVE: Two new developments from Bayer MaterialScience LLC, Pittsburgh, are said to provide new capabilities in LED lenses and lighting fixtures. First, new Makrolon LED2643 reportedly achieves an unprecedented light-transmission efficiency (up to 92.3%) in a 30-mm-diam. LED lens. This said to be a new feat because larger the lens, the greater the light loss in the transmission material. The new grade is expected to meet the latest UL 8750 standards for LED lighting (including UL 94V-2 flame rating). The PC was developed for an unusually large LED lighting lens from Carclo Technical Plastics, Latrobe, Pa. Second, Bayer offers new light-diffusion formulation technology to disguise LED hot spots in lighting fixtures, allowing higher light transmission than ever before while hiding the point light source, and with less reflectance than previously achieved.
