Windmoeller & Hoelscher GmbH in Germany (U.S. office in Lincoln, R.I.) is the latest player to enter the field of nine-layer blown film dies. W&H is building the first nine-layer version of its conical spiral-mandrel Maxicone die and believes it will have the shortest melt path and smallest melt volume on the market, with corresponding lower pressure drop. The die will be 15 to 22 in. in diam. In other nine-layer dies, the melt makes a right-angle turn, whereas the Maxicone takes an angled shortcut. This reportedly will provide greater flexibility to change the position of barrier layers in a film structure.
