Powder priming of thermoset sheet molding compound (SMC) is getting a lot of attention as an alternative to liquid solvent-based primers.

Powder priming of thermoset sheet molding compound (SMC) is getting a lot of attention as an alternative to liquid solvent-based primers. The latest introduction in this area is Arotran 610 polyester from Ashland Composite Polymers, Dublin, Ohio. It incorporates new low-profile additives that reduce moisture content, preventing formation of surface roughness during cure of the powder primer. General Motors is validating the resin for Class-A SMC parts such as automotive hoods, fenders, and deck lids. Ashland also developed Pliogrip 5500 adhesive to adhere to the powder-primable SMC and to coated metal. Cure times are as short as 60 sec in standard heated assembly fixtures.
