Two grades of Toolox prehardened tool steel plates are now offered by Hasco America Inc., Fletcher, N.C. New Toolox steels are made by SSAB Oxelosund AB in Sweden. These low-carbon steels are said to have low residual stresses, which helps achieve nearly distortion-free machining, and their high cleanliness (claimed to be close to ESR levels) facilitates polishing and etching. They need no heat treatment and their high-heat tolerance of 1094 F (590 C) allows them to be gas nitrided and PVD coated. They are also said to be two to three times tougher than other steels of comparable hardness. Toolox 33 is prehardened to 29 HRC and tempered, yet it can be machined more easily than competing steels, Hasco says. Toolox 44 is prehardened to 45 HRC, said to be the world’s hardest fully prehardened steel, with the same hardness throughout. (828) 650-2600 • www.hasco.com
