New compostable extruded netting products were recently introduced in Australia and the U.S. BioPak Pty. Ltd. in Bondi Junction, NSW, Australia, which specializes in biobased compostable packaging, developed its own bio-resin formulation together with CSIRO (the Australian Commonwealth Scientific Research Organization). BioPak’s compostable netting was commercialized last October using potato-starch-based BioPlast resin from Biotec GmbH in Germany plus other bio-based ingredients. In the U.S., Conwed Plastics Inc. in Minneapolis launched Vexar compostable extruded netting using an additive to promote rapid oxidation in LDPE and other petrochemical-based plastics. The first compostable netting was introduced six years ago by NNZ BV in the Netherlands. (NNZ Inc. is in Lawrenceville, Ga.) That Okopack biodegradable netting was made exclusively for NNZ in Italy using Novamont’s Mater-bi starch-based resin.
