A new high-precision pumping system is claimed to significantly reduce catalyst-to-resin ratio variation and to help eliminate problems like porosity, pre-release, and gelcoat cracking. The Patriot from Magnum Venus Products, Clearwater, Fla., is a positive-displacement pump for open and closed-mold processes that reportedly delivers ±0.1% ratio control and ±1% or better resin flow control. Typical ratio variance in the industry is 7% to 10% and as high as 30%, the company says. Resin flow can vary up to 25%. Pump output is up to 30 lb/min. A key feature is a hardened displacement rod coated with a thick hard-chrome layer for longer wear life. Also, special "self-healing" seals for the resin and catalyst pumps have a very low coefficient of friction and are said to greatly reduce heat build-up and wear. The seal does not require packing adjustment. In addition, the redesigned catalyst pump includes a soft-stop inlet valve that allows for a positive sealing surface with a stop to maintain flow and reduce inlet ball wear.
