A new screw promises shorter injection molding cycles, lower melt temperatures, and better color and additive dispersion than competitive high-performance screws or conventional general-purpose screws. The Fusion screw from Xaloy Inc., Pulaski, Va., is said to combine the melting efficiency of a barrier screw with intensive, chaotic mixing in a second barrier zone with an undulating root profile. Plasticating rate is said to be about 83 g/sec at 236 F with a 1.8 MFI HDPE. The screw reportedly works with ABS, polyolefins, PET, and PLA.
