The new Fusion II screw from Xaloy Inc., Pulaski, Va., is said to enhance chaotic mixing relative to earlier designs and thereby improve color or additive dispersion as well as melt homogeneity. The Fusion II screw has two barrier zones, with melting and metering taking place in the first zone and intensive, chaotic mixing occurring in the second, which has an undulating root profile. This screw also improves mixing by adding grooves in the primary flights of the second barrier. These allow materials in adjacent melt channels to mix, enhancing the chaotic action produced by the screw's root profile. Fusion II reportedly delivers 15% higher plasticating rates and up to 10° C lower melt temperatures than standard mixing screws. Plasticating rate is similar to the earlier Fusion design. The screw can also be used in extrusion and blow molding, and it works with PE, PET, ABS, and biodegradable PLA.
