WEB EXCLUSIVE: Soft, thin skins for automotive instrument panels, airbag covers, and interior trim can now be molded with Tek-Spheres vinyl microbeads from Teknor Apex Co., Vinyl Div., Pawtucket, R.I. Microbeads are compounded of PVC, color, plasticizer, and other additives in Shore A hardnesses from 55 to 90. They flow freely over the inside of hollow molds in slush molding and rotomolding, and the tiny beads (0.004 in. diam.) melt rapidly in contact with the heated mold. They provide molded-in color and appealing tactile properties while being simpler to process and less energy intensive than powder blends or plastisols, according to the company. After years of producing microbeads for non-automotive markets, Teknor acquired the rights to market them internationally to he automotive industry through an agreement with Bayer MaterialScience AG in Germany.
