At NPE in Chicago, Kraton Polymers LLC, Houston, highlighted two pairs of new styrenic block copolymers. Two new SEBS grades are Kraton G1643 and G1645. G1643 is highly compatible with PP. Typical blends of 10% to 40% Kraton reportedly provide excellent clarity and improved resistance to blushing and cracking. The resins can be blended at the extruder or molding machine. Applications include housewares, medical devices, auto parts, and packaging—such as gallon juice containers that replace polycarbonate.
Kraton G1645 (35 Shore A) shows potential for replacing PVC in medical drapery, tubing, and IV bags. It is said to show good puncture resistance needed for such applications and easy processing in blown and cast film and other extrusion.
Kraton A1535 (83 Shore A) and A1536 ( 65A) are newly commercialized S-(EB/S)-S grades offered as alternatives to PVC in wire and cable for high-tech electronics, hose, and soft-grip overmolding for personal care and sporting goods.
