WEB EXCLUSIVE: Evonik Industries, in cooperation with KraussMaffei, has established the CoverForm Competence Center in Darmstadt, Germany, headquarters for Evonik’s Performance Polymers business unit and Evonik Rohm GmbH, supplier of acrylic monomers and polymers. (U.S. counterpart is Evonik Cyro LLC, Parsippany, N.J.) CoverForm is a jointly developed technology for applying functional coatings onto plastic parts inside the injection mold. At the K 2007 show in Dusseldorf, Evonik and KraussMaffei demonstrated applying and curing a scratch-proof acrylate coating on a PMMA cell-phone display shield. After molding the part using a special grade of acrylic resin, the mold opened slightly and the solvent-free reactive coating was injected into the resulting space. After initial solidification, the coating was cured in the mold by a blast of UV light. Equipped with a KraussMaffei CX hydraulic press, the new Competence Center will be used for customer trials and for developing new in-mold coatings.
