A new family of nylon 6 compounds from Clariant Masterbatches North America, Millington, Md., offers an unusual combination of toughness, easy processing, and good surface finish. Previously, users of toughened nylon were forced to make a tradeoff between processability and aesthetics. The new materials use a proprietary combination of additives that yields a translucent material that is said to be more receptive to color and has excellent contact clarity. Unfilled versions have notched Izod impact of 16 ft lb/in., tensile strength of 7000 psi, flex modulus of 280,000 psi, and flexural strength of 11,000 psi. The new compounds are aimed at lawn and garden, power tools, furniture, sporting goods, electrical products, and auto interiors. For such uses, Clariant's new compounds are more economical than impact-modified nylon 66, and they flow better through pin gates and thin wall sections, Clariant says.
