Teknor Apex, Pawtucket, R.I., has introduced what it calls the first TPEs that comply with regulations aimed at preventing the transmission of so-called "mad cow disease." Two series of Uniprene and Monprene TPEs comply with the requirements because they contain no animal-derived materials (ADMs) such as lubricants based on beef tallow. Potential applications include medical tubing, syringe tips, toothbrushes, ear plugs, and food-packaging seals. Teknor claims that a majority of polymers-including TPEs-contain some animal-derived material. Directives from the European Union and the U.S. FDA put strict limitations on the use of ADMs in medical and other regulated products. Teknor's new ADM-free TPEs are exact counterparts to standard Uniprene and Monprene compounds. ADM-free Uniprene olefinic TPVs come in hardness from 45 to 80 Shore A, while Monprene styrenic triblock copolymers are available in 38 to 65 Shore A. Tel: (401) 725-8000 . www.teknorapex.com
