A corotating twin-screw lab extruder introduced to the U.S. at NPE is the first lab model from C.W. Brabender Instruments, Hackensack, N.J., with a built-in drive motor. Brabender typically plugs its lab extruders into a separate Plasti-Corder drive unit. The new TSE 20/40 lab unit has 20 mm diam., 40:1 L/D, and a 5.2 kW inverter drive that can provide speeds up to 600 rpm-four times higher than with the Plasti-Corder drive. It also has a clamshell-opening barrel and segmented screw elements. Throughput is about 33 lb/hr.
