Two new products from Bunting Magnetics Co., Newton, Kan., are said to do a better job of keeping tramp metal out of your process. They will be shown at NPE next month. First, the Machine-Mounted Separator (MMS) is an electronic metal detector that senses and rejects all types of metal-not just those that respond to magnetism. It is installed at the throat of extruders and molding machines (photo). This all-metal separator can remove particles as small as 0.5 mm. Unlike some competing units, the fast-acting MMS reportedly has no "blind spot" during rejection that could let contaminants slip by. Also new is the Neo FF Series drawer magnet, whose high-strength neodymium magnets can catch ferrous particles so small that operators may not be able to see them. This is said to be an exceptional level of protection that minimizes screw wear and plugging of hot-runner nozzles and tiny gates.
