A novel servo-electric plasticating and injection system for presses up to 250 tons reportedly delivers more power and higher injection speeds with faster acceleration than conventional ballscrew and timing-belt arrangements. Introduced at last fall's IPF show in Tokyo, Japan, the High Power High Speed system from Moog Inc., Industrial Controls Div., East Aurora, N.Y., incorporates an unusual-looking actuator of a non-linear, low-friction design that uses no ballscrews nor belts, coupled with a high-torque, direct-drive AC servomotor. The actuator emits relatively little heat and allows for long hold times at high pressure with minimal power consumption. The closed-case design requires no lubrication and is designed to operate for more than 30,000 hr (mean time between maintenance). The unit is designed for screw sizes of 50 or 56 mm diam. and accommodates injection strokes up to 200 mm. Maximum injection rate is 1478 mm3/sec or 600 mm/sec and max. injection pressure is 36,250 psi. Screw speed is up to 320 rpm. Acceleration response time is just 30 millisec. Injection power is rated at 400 hp.
