New notched screws for the tiny twin-screw lab extruder from DSM Xplore in the Netherlands reportedly improve exfoliation and dispersion of nano-additives. The notches are tapered like half a cone with the point aiming downstream, so melt flows into the wide end of the notch and is squeezed out the point, increasing extensional flow. DSM Xplore (represented by Dieter Scientific, Barrington, Ill.) has tested prototypes at Mich. State Univ. Composite Center in E. Lansing and at the Univ. of Naples, Italy, which is using the screws with DSM Xplore’s new lab-size fiber spinneret to reinforce PET fibers with carbon nano-tubes.
