New oxygen-scavenging technology for PET packaging has been developed by the ColorMatrix Group, Berea, Ohio. It is in the preliminary steps of seeking regulatory and taste-test approvals for its developmental HyGuard oxygen scavenger in several target markets. According to technology director John Standish, months of testing show that a HyGuard PET compound reduced oxygen ingress by a factor of 300 vs. a PET control. Standish notes that HyGuard has a triggering mechanism that initiates oxygen-scavenging activity without any loss of activity between the blow molding step and bottle filling, such as reportedly can occur with other scavengers. Standish also cites improved appearance of recycled material from bottles containing the scavenger. Unlike current oxygen scavengers, which are said to add yellowness, initial results show negligible color contribution from HyGuard. (216) 622-0100 • www.colormatrix.com
