A new freezer-grade PP has made its U.S. debut in ice cream packaging. Pro-fax EP 390S from Basell USA, Elkton, Md., is an opaque, high-impact PP copolymer that reportedly can withstand drop impact at temperatures down to -40 F. According to new business development manager Dave McKeeman, previous food-packaging PP grades could withstand only refrigerator temperatures down to 38 F without cracking or breaking on impact. EPS 390S also offers high flow (35 MFR), can withstand microwave temperatures, and is dishwasher-safe. The material inspired Wells’ Dairy, Inc., Le Mars, Iowa, to switch from a traditional round paperboard container to an elliptical in-mold labeled, 58-oz injection molded PP container for its Blue Bunny brand ice cream.
