Two suppliers report greater availability of long-fiber thermoplastics (LFTs). First, European-developed Stamax long-fiber PP pellets are now available in the U.S. from SABIC Innovative Plastics, Pittsfield, Mass. New production capacity will be built in North America in 2009. The material has enjoyed success in Europe as a lightweight replacement for metal and traditional plastics like SMA and PC/ABS in car door modules, IP retainers, and front modules. Also under investigation are tailgate inners. For complete properties, visit www.ptonline.com/plaspec. Meanwhile, PlastiComp LLC, Winona, Minn., has adapted its LFT technology to high-temperature resins such as PPS, PES, PEI, and PEEK reinforced with long glass or carbon fiber. These long-fiber materials are targeted at metal applications. Customtailored fiber contents of 40% to 50% are offered for injection molding, compression molding, and filament winding.
